Fjærland – from Fjord to Glacier It was late May. We drove from Oslo to visit Fjærland in the Sognefjord, to spend some days in this picturesque village surrounded by fjord, mountains and glaciers. May is a great month to visit the fjords.

The Norwegian Glacier Museum is an award-winning hands-on museum, situated in Fjærland at the head of the Fjærlandsfjord. The museum is the leading centre in Norway for dissemination of knowledge with regard to glaciers and climate.

It took us a while to find it as our GPS could not locate it. You will arrive to a small parking lot, and from there it's a 5-minute walk. The narrow Fjærlandsfjord with its steep and forested mountainsides leads you to the edges of the majestic Jostedal Glacier. Along the fjord there are many hamlets and farms. Most of these farms are deserted, and they now serve as reminders of people's toil and challenges in former times.
